MP's identity stolen while away

Northampton South MP Brian Binley An MP has had his identity stolen after thieves hacked into his bank account while he was fact-finding in India.

Northampton South MP Brian Binley said the offenders had tried to steal £9,000 from his bank account and divert Parliamentary mail to another address.

The fraudster wrote to him bragging he had managed to swindle copies of his bank statements.

On his return from India Mr Binley discovered the address on his bank accounts had been changed.

Fraudster investigated

Money had been transferred between accounts and his mail had been redirected to a house in Brockley, south London.

He only noticed he had been a victim of identity theft at the weekend when he opened a letter dated 2 January from his bank to confirm his address change request.

"It is totally unbelievable," Mr Binley said. "If it can happen to me, an MP, then nobody's bank account is safe.

"Fortunately I spotted it in time and they have not taken any money, but it has been very worrying."

Police said a known fraudster was under investigation for hacking into his details.
