Moon landings inspire giant maze

A North Yorkshire farmer has created a maze resembling a giant astronaut to mark the 40th anniversary of the first Apollo landings.

Tom Pearcy, 38, carved the image, measuring more than 1,000ft (300m), out of about a million maize plants on a site near York.

Some 10km (6.2 miles) of paths form an intricate maze for visitors to explore.

Mr Pearcy's previous maze designs include the Statue of Liberty and the Flying Scotsman locomotive.

The farmer has been creating mazes every summer for the past five years on land just off the A64.

He said: "Each year I try to choose a maze design which is both topical and makes a great aerial image.

"Marking the 40th anniversary of the first manned flight to the moon is my personal tribute to the endeavour and bravery of those lunar pioneers."
