Police warn of swimming dangers

Millennium Bridge, York

Police in North Yorkshire have warned children to be aware of the dangers of swimming in lakes and rivers during the summer holidays.

Ch Insp Nick Warnes said: "The region is packed with rivers, canals, lakes, reservoirs and flooded quarries that look perfect for a cooling dip.

"Parents must get through to their children the enormous dangers of swimming in rivers and lakes."

He said the popularity of diving into the River Ouse in York was a concern.

"Despite its placid appearance, the Ouse runs fast and deep, with many unexpected currents," said Ch Insp Warnes.

"It is also a dumping ground for rubbish, which lies hidden under the water until some rash jumper or diver makes sudden contact."

He said people who jump from bridges, including York's Millennium Bridge, were particularly at risk.

"If they don't hit some hard, sharp debris under the water, there is a chance they will dive head-first onto the deck of a boat coming through."
