Teenager injured in cliff plunge

RAF rescue helicopter

A teenager suffered serious head injuries after falling 150ft (45m) down a cliff side in Scarborough.

Rescuers said they believed the German 15-year-old, who is on a visit to the UK, was jogging at Scalby Ness in Scarborough when he slipped.

An RAF rescue helicopter was scrambled to airlift him to Hull Royal Infirmary at about 1245 BST.

Flt Lt Graham Stewart said the boy fell a long way down a steep cliff face but he said it was not a vertical drop.

Flt Lt Stewart said: "He went a long way down the earth slope and rolled right down to the bottom.

"He suffered quite a severe head injury. It was quite nasty."

The helicopter from RAF Leconfield near Beverley could not land on the beach because the tide was too far in and the teenager had to be winched aboard.

The helicopter returned to Scalby Ness to transfer a person suffering an ankle injury to Scarborough Hospital.

Scarborough and Burnsiton Coastguards cliff rescue teams were also called to the scene following an initial emergency call to the ambulance service.

Clive Stephenson, from the Humber Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre, said: "We would like to remind the public to keep to the path and stay away from the cliff edges as a slip or trip could be fatal."
