Fatal tree crash car 'was stolen'

A man who died when a car skidded off a road and crashed into a tree in North Yorkshire has been named.

Derek Gavin Smith, 31, of York, was killed in the accident on Pottery Lane, between Strensall and Sheriff Hutton, in the early hours of Sunday.

North Yorkshire Police said the silver Mini Cooper he was travelling in had been reported stolen hours earlier.

A 24-year-old man from York and a 17-year-old youth, who were both injured in the crash, have been arrested.

North Yorkshire Police said the man had been released on bail while inquiries continue.

The youth remains in hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries.

The Mini was reported stolen from Clifton Moor Retail Park at 1915 GMT on Saturday.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
