Snow and ice warning to motorists

People walk through the snow-covered village of Lockton

Motorists have been urged to take care after snow fell across many areas of North Yorkshire.

Some roads in Scarborough, Pickering and Whitby are impassable.

Three vehicles were involved in an accident on the A171 between Whitby and Scarborough when they skidded and left the carriageway. No one was injured.

The Met Office said snow would continue to fall on Sunday and would be followed by rain, which could give widespread ice on roads and pavements.

Sgt Andy Richardson, from North Yorkshire Police, urged people only to travel by car where absolutely necessary.

He said: "If it is necessary make sure your mobile phone is charged, you have got sufficient fuel in your vehicle just in case you do get caught out."
