Flood warnings removed after rain

Villagers wade through water in Sinnington

Two of the three severe flood warnings issued by the Environment Agency for North Yorkshire have been withdrawn.

Several homes and roads in Pickering were flooded on Saturday after the local beck burst its banks. Fire crews were called to pump out houses.

But the Environment Agency has now scaled down alerts for the area to less-severe flood warnings.

A severe flood warning remains in place for properties near to Brough Beck at Catterick.

Other flood warnings still in place across the county include the River Nidd at Knaresborough and the Ouse at Naburn.

Trapped in cars

Earlier North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said two women were rescued after their car became trapped by 2ft (60cm) of water in the village of Carlton.

Five occupants of a car had to be rescued after their vehicle became trapped in a ford, also near Carlton.

Six homes were flooded in Gilling West and water had gone into properties in Summerbridge, near Harrogate.

In Danby, near Whitby, a disabled man was rescued from a vehicle.

And in the Dales town of Reeth a herd of cows had to be rescued from flood water.

Phil Rothwell, from the Environment Agency, said the wet summer had not helped the situation.

"I think our catchments and the soils are very wet and saturated, and river levels are therefore responding very quickly."
