Police 'shock' at gunpoint theft

A man has been robbed at gunpoint in Scarborough in what police said was "a shocking and highly unusual" crime.

The victim was walking along Stepney Grove on Friday evening when he was approached by two youths who threatened him with a black handgun.

The hoodie-wearing robbers stole the man's black leather briefcase, his wallet and a watch.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the victim, a man in his 50s, was not injured but was left "very distressed".

Det Insp Tony Quinn, from Scarborough CID, said: "I cannot remember an incident like this and I have been around here for a long time.

"It is shocking and highly unusual."

He appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact the police.

The robbers are described as in their late teens or early 20s, both wearing hoodies and track suit bottoms.
