A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a woman at a house in a North Yorkshire village.

Police were called to reports of a woman being assaulted at a house in West Tanfield, near Ripon, just before 2200 BST on Thursday.

The 29-year-old woman, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

A police spokeswoman said a 46-year-old man had been arrested and was being questioned by detectives.

A post-mortem examination will take place later.
