Elderly woman dies crossing A64

An elderly woman was killed when she was hit by a Land Rover as she crossed the A64 in North Yorkshire.

The victim had just been dropped off by someone in a car when the accident happened near Whitwell-on-the-Hill on Thursday afternoon.

The road was closed for several hours, causing five-mile tailbacks as rush-hour traffic was diverted.

Police want to trace a middle-aged couple in a Volvo, which overtook the Land Rover just before the accident.

Witnesses said they stopped further down the road and reversed back to the scene of the crash before driving off a short time later.
