Meat firm closes with 75 job cuts

Meat packaging factory

The last 75 people working at a meat processing factory in Norfolk are to lose their jobs.

The Tulip plant in Thetford, which saw the loss of 400 jobs in 2007, will be shut down, the firm has announced.

Management will now enter into a 30-day consultation period with union representatives regarding the future of the Caxton Road site.

Managing director of Tulip's North East Division Peter Judge said the recent economic downturn had hit the firm.

"It is with great sadness that we are announcing our intention to cease the production of cooked bacon products at our Thetford site," Mr Judge said.

"This proposal is in no way a reflection on the quality or dedication of our workforce and we very much regret the impact that the announcement will have."

The firm said it would work closely with unions to identify ways to "lessen the impact of the announcement and support those employees affected".
