Tesco buys closed Campbell's site

Supermarket giant Tesco has claimed its plans to redevelop an industrial site in Norfolk could create up to 300 jobs.

The company has announced it has bought the former Campbell's site in Hardwick Road, King's Lynn, from Premier Foods.

It said plans were being drawn up for the regeneration of the site and public consultation would take place early next year.

Premier Foods closed the former King's Lynn factory in December last year and moved production to other sites.

The site became part of Premier Foods in August 2006 when the company acquired the UK business of Campbell's.

'Vital employment'

After its closure, production of Homepride Sauces and Fray Bentos pies was moved to other Premier Foods factories including nearby Wisbech and Long Sutton.

Tesco spokesperson Nick Gellatly said: "We're delighted to be investing in the regeneration of this site so it can continue to serve King's Lynn and provide vital employment to many hundreds of people."

Councillor Nick Daubney, leader of the Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, said Tesco's purchase of the site was "good news".

He said: "It will create jobs and help promote economic activity in the area.

"It reinforces King's Lynn's position as the main centre serving a significant population not only in west Norfolk but also in parts of Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire."

Tesco said it was too early to say exactly what the site would be transformed into, but it said the development would bring new businesses to the area.
