Man named in fatal aircraft crash

Ian Davies

The man who died when a light plane crashed into a tractor in South Norfolk has been named by police.

Ian Alexander Davies, 49, of Topcroft, in Norfolk, died on Wednesday afternoon when the plane crashed into a crop spraying tractor at Seething Airfield.

A 51-year-old man who was also in the plane is in a critical condition in Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with serious injuries.

The tractor driver, Andrew Hill aged in his 60s, was treated for shock.

A spokesman for Seething Airfield said the two-seater aircraft was coming in to land when it collided with the vehicle spraying crops.

Watch Manager Richard McGonagle, of Norfolk Fire Service, said a fire broke out following the crash, but it was dealt with by airfield staff.

He said it appeared the aircraft hit part of the crop-spraying tractor on its approach to the runway.

Norfolk Police are investigating the crash along with the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB).

Paul Bassett, a senior officer with the East of England Ambulance Service, said: "The front of the aircraft was basically non-existent and the framework of the tail was visible. You could see the internal structure of the tail."
