Support hope for new genome unit

Plans for a £13.5m life sciences research centre that could create up to 750 local jobs are due to be discussed next week by councillors.

A report recommends Norfolk County Council pledges £1m to support setting up a genome analysis centre in Norwich.

The centre, the first of its kind in the UK, would analyse plant, microbial, fish and farm animal genomes.

The centre at Norwich Research Park is estimated to generate £5m in revenue a year and employ up to 750 people.

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), leading the project, is keen to locate the genome analysis centre in Norwich to complement and work alongside existing research facilities.

Financial backing

The centre would occupy the current genome centre on Norwich Research Park.

Set-up costs for the new centre are projected to be about £13.5m.

Funding for the project is being sought from the East of England Development Agency, South Norfolk Council, Norwich City Council, the Greater Norwich Development Partnership and Norfolk County Council.

BBSRC are also willing to provide substantial and continuing financial support for the centre.

Daniel Cox, leader of Norfolk County Council, said: "The proposal is an exciting prospect for Norwich and would certainly enhance the city's reputation for research and development.

"I'm looking forward to discussing the report at the meeting and finding out what other cabinet members think."
