Royal Mail workers at a large sorting office in Norfolk had to leave the premises after an employee spotted a suspect package.
About 60 staff were working in the Norwich building which was evacuated earlier after the security alert.
A police spokesman said a bomb disposal squad was called in.
Staff have now returned to work in the office, on Thorpe Road, and a police investigation into the incident is under way.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "In line with well-rehearsed security procedures, about 60 staff on the night shift were evacuated.
"There will be some knock-on effect to deliveries in the area as a result, but they will be back to normal by tomorrow."
Experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit at Colchester attended the scene during the morning and their assessment was that the package was of no danger.
The item has now been seized by police and further enquiries are ongoing.
