£4m memorial restoration pledged

Norwich memorial garden design Restoration of a memorial garden which has lain derelict for more than a year is to start early next year.

The project to restore the gardens and war memorial in Norwich will cost £4m and take up to two years to complete.

The city council will sell land near Bowthorpe for housing to fund the restoration, council leader Steve Morphew said.

Ex-war reporter Martin Bell criticised the state of the war memorial when he visited the city last week.

Norwich City Council had been planning the redevelopment for some time and were set to recommend a scheme drawn up by an independent architect last year.

Plans were published showing how the gardens and surrounding area above Norwich market might look but work on the scheme stopped.

Mr Morphew said something will now be done.

"It's been a disgrace. There've been good reasons for it but no excuses for it being the way it is.

"We promised to sort it out as soon as we could but I told the veterans we would not make any promises we could not keep.

"I can now make those promises. It is now going to be done - no ifs or buts. It is going to happen."
