Winslet gives charity libel cash

Kate Winslet Kate Winslet has given cash awarded in a libel action over a magazine claim she had visited a diet doctor to a Norfolk-based eating disorder charity.

Beat said it was delighted to receive £3,000 from the Hollywood actress.

Grazia Magazine had suggested Winslet, from Reading, Berkshire, had visited a diet doctor despite openly criticising the so-called "size-zero" culture.

The magazine apologised and accepted the actress had visited a doctor with a neck problem.

Winslet took the magazine to the High Court, and was awarded an undisclosed sum in damages in March.

'Thoughtful way'

Mary George, of Beat, said the actress, who has been outspoken against the pressures to diet faced by women, was a very good role model.

She added: "Kate said at the time that she would donate her winnings to an eating disorder charity and that is what she has done.

"I think she was inundated by charities asking for help.

"We were informed last week the money would be split between three eating disorder charities and we were thrilled to be one of them.

"This is a very thoughtful way of highlighting the issue."

In December, the 31-year-old actress said her concern over the effect of fashion magazines on girls was so great she refused to have them in the same house as her six-year-old daughter, Mia.
