Grant boosts church repair work

Christ Church, New Catton, Norwich A 19th Century church in Norfolk is to undergo urgent repairs thanks to a grant of almost £95,000.

The Grade II-listed Christ Church in New Catton, Norwich, built in about 1840 from locally-sourced materials, needs vital repairs to its roof.

The church's valley and parapet gutters also need remedial work.

The money is part of £225,000 given for repairs to Grade II-listed churches in the eastern region by the Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage.

Two other churches in the region will also receive grants.

The Church of St Mary in Ponsbourne, Hertfordshire, will receive £76,000 which will go towards repairs to its tower.

It is one of the Hertford Hundred group and dates from 1849.

St Mary's Church in Willisham, Suffolk, has been awarded £56,000 to re-roof the chancel.

Built in 1878, the church was designed by Herbert Green, a Norwich architect, who made use of rubble from an earlier medieval church that stood on the site.
