Protest held over Tesco store bid

Anti-Tesco campaigners Campaigners against plans for a Tesco store in a small town in Norfolk have staged a protest near the site of the proposed supermarket.

Anti-Tesco group Scamrod said the store in Sheringham would hit local trade and destroy the character of the town.

On Saturday members protested in Cromer Road opposite the Lockerbie Flats where the proposed store would be built.

Tesco said many local people support the plans and shoppers using the new store would also buy from local shops.

Katherine Edwards, corporate affairs manager for Tesco - who was in Sheringham at a public display of the plans, said: "People who have come and seen the plans have been really enthusiastic about Tesco coming here."

Eroica Mildmay, one of the campaigners against the Tesco store, said: "Tesco want to take money from Sheringham. We've got to take to stand up for the town's special qualities."

A government planning inspector was examining Tesco's plans after the supermarket claimed the North Norfolk District Council was taking too long to come to a decision on its application.
