Council appoint new culture chief

La Princesse

A new leader of culture has been appointed in Liverpool to continue the city's "legacy" of the Capital of Culture into 2009.

Claire McColgan, executive for the Culture Company, will become head of culture for Liverpool City Council.

The aim is to carry on delivering a strong cultural programme, along with a team of 25 people.

It comes after the council earmarked £4.1m to fund culture events for organisations to apply for in 2009.

Leader of Liverpool City Council, Councillor Warren Bradley, said: "Claire's track record is impeccable and is hugely respected locally and nationally for inspiring and delivering community-led cultural projects.

"This appointment demonstrates the council's commitment to working alongside partners, and under Claire's leadership will provide the whole region a future programme to be proud of."
