Transport boosted for spider show

More ferries and trains will be running in Liverpool this weekend to cope with the extra visitors expected in the city for the La Machine spider spectacle.

The French company which brought the Sultan's Elephant to London has created a 50ft (15m) high mechanical spider for a five-day piece of street theatre.

Thousands are expected at the Pier Head on Friday to see the spider "wake up".

Merseytravel said more ferries would be running and Merseyrail trains would be "strengthened" with extra carriages.

Queensway Tunnel closed

Additional Mersey Ferries will run from Pier Head, Seacombe and Woodside ferry terminals on Friday evening.

There will also be extended direct services running every half hour until 2045 BST.

Merseytravel said bus services in and out of the city centre would be disrupted, and passengers were advised to check the changes before travelling.

Northern Rail will be adding extra carriages to services from Lime Street Station on Saturday from 1700 BST onwards, as well as almost all day on Sunday.

Merseyrail will be increasing trains to six carriages on major routes on Friday after 1900 BST, most of Saturday and all day on Sunday.

The Queensway Tunnel will also be closed to traffic from 0600 BST on Sunday until 0630 BST on Monday.

The Kingsway (Wallasey) Tunnel will not be affected.
