Concrete thrown at moving train

CCTV footage is being examined by transport police after a slab of concrete was thrown at a moving train from a bridge on Merseyside.

The stone was thrown from the Akenside Street bridge between Litherland and Seaforth stations on Tuesday night.

British Transport Police (BTP) said the concrete was inches from smashing the driver's window.

Video footage from the surrounding area is being examined and forensic tests are being carried out.

'Mindless vandalism'

The train was the 2000 BST Merseyrail from Southport to Hunts Cross.

The concrete embedded in the roof and the train has been taken out of service.

Ch Insp Neil Moffatt, of British Transport Police, said: "The concrete was inches away from smashing the driver's window and it is extremely fortunate that on this occasion nobody was injured.

"Youths need to realise that throwing objects at trains is not a game, it is mindless vandalism that is taken extremely seriously by BTP and we will actively be following all lines of inquiry to establish who is responsible for this incident."
