Protest over tunnel charge rise

Queensway Tunnel

A protest has taken place in Merseyside over rising charges for motorists using the Kingsway and Queensway tunnels.

From midnight the cost to car drivers of using the tunnels between Liverpool and Wirral increased by 10p to £1.40.

Class two vehicles, which include small goods vehicles and coaches, now have to pay £2.80 - a £1.50 rise.

Operator Merseytravel say the rise will help tackle congestion. The protest, by Mersey Tunnels Users' Association, was held on Oakdale Road bridge, Wallasey.

'No justification'

A spokesman for the association said: "Drivers are already paying a fortune when they use the roads because of fuel and other taxes.

"There is no justification for this increase, as the Tunnels already make a large profit.

"We are urging everyone on Merseyside to protest to their local councillors and MPs and demand that the tolls be removed.

"If people just grumble, but don't protest in one way or another, then it is likely that there will be another tolls increase in 12 months time."
