Thousands attend Ladies Day event

Thousands of people have turned out in the sunshine for one of the most fashionable events in the racing calendar - Aintree's Ladies Day.

About 50,000 people are expected at the Liverpool racecourse for the second day of the 161st Grand National festival.

The mix of glamour and exotic outfits will be judged in a fashion contest which 500 women have entered.

On Thursday, a record 27,608 people number of people visited Aintree, beating the 2007 turnout of 27,060.

In recent years Ladies Day has become known as Liverpool Day because of the high number of local people attending.

Thousands more women are expected to enter the fashion contest, called Style 2008, as they arrive at Aintree on Friday.

Wayne Rooney's fiancée Coleen McLoughlin, 22, will present £35,000 worth of prizes to the winners.

They include a £25,000 Citroen car, a 10-day holiday for two in St Lucia or Barbados and a new wardrobe of clothes.

Ms McLoughlin, who wore a short floral Balenciaga dress, said the Style 2008 competition gave Liverpool's women an opportunity to dress up and have fun. "The advice I would give to the girls in the competition is be yourself and be confident. Everyone looks great," she said.

"Everyone has made such an effort from the top to the toe."

Competition judges this year include ex-Emmerdale actress Sheree Murphy, who is married to Liverpool footballer Harry Kewell.
