Chester painting sold to city man

John Glover's oil painting

A painting of a scene of Chester from across the River Dee has been bought by a private dealer who lives in the city.

The work, by artist John Glover, was snapped up for £30,000 at Bonhams auction house in London. The guide price was between £35,000 and £55,000.

The dealer said he bought the painting because he lives in a house next to the river which is depicted in the scene.

The oil painting features Chester Castle and the Gaol, the Church of St Mary-on-the-Hill and the Shot Tower.

John Glover was born in Leicestershire in 1767 and emigrated to Tasmania in 1821. His oil paintings are thought to date from the early 1800s onwards.
