QE2 to 'open new liner terminal'

QE2 One of the world's most famous liners is set to celebrate its 40th birthday by opening Liverpool's new cruise liner terminal in September 2007.

A Cunard spokesman confirmed on Friday that discussions were under way for the liner to mark its milestone with a day long party on the River Mersey.

Work begins in April on the 350 metre (1,148ft) extension to Princes Dock.

The QE2 was the last great Cunard liner conceived at its Pier Head HQ before the company moved to Southampton.

A Cunard spokesman said: "We have plans to take the QE2 to Liverpool for its anniversary but they have yet to be finalised."
