Funeral for murdered Shafilea

Farzana Ahmed The funeral of murdered teenager Shafilea Ahmed has taken place at an Islamic centre in her home town.

The 17-year-old's body was found by the River Kent at Sedgewick, near Kendal, Cumbria, in February.

Her parents, Iftikhar, 44, and Farzana, 41, were arrested over the death amid speculation she was the victim of an honour killing. They were later bailed.

About 150 mourners attended the ceremony at the Warrington Islamic Community Centre.

Her body was taken for burial later at a local cemetery.

Potential marriage partner

Shafilea's coffin was driven from the family home in Warrington to the ceremony in a cortege with a police motorcycle escort.

The main funeral took place before an all-male congregation.

The coffin was then taken to a second room where female mourners were gathered.

A few months before her death, Shafilea drank bleach after a family trip to Pakistan where she had been introduced to a potential marriage partner.

She had also written poems about feeling trapped.

An inquest last month was told the cause of death had still not been established.

Her parents have been released without charge on police bail.

They both vehemently deny any involvement in their daughter's death.
