Airport detention centre protest

Around 100 protesters gathered at Manchester Airport to raise public awareness of a holding centre for illegal immigrants.

Pennine House, near to the airport's Terminal Two, houses up to 32 adult detainees as they await deportation.

Members of the Manchester-branch of the anti-border controls group No Borders gathered at the terminal on Saturday and handed out protest fliers.

Police said the protest was peaceful and there were no arrests.

'Shameful facilities'

Manchester Airport said there was no disruption to flights or other airport operations.

Seth Jones, an activist with No Borders, said "We believe that nobody should be detained and deported for daring to exist in the wrong place and time."

No Borders believes in free movement for everyone across the world and calls for the abolition of all immigration controls in Britain and elsewhere.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "There was a peaceful protest at Manchester Airport when a modest number of people tried to walk in and out of Terminal Two.

"We restricted their access to some parts of the terminal for safety and security reasons but there were no problems and no arrests."
