Holiday fall man 'has no memory'

A man who plunged six floors from the walkway of a holiday flat with a friend has no memory of what happened to them, his friend has told the BBC.

Lee Cook, 28, and Gemma France, 18, of Greater Manchester, were found lying bleeding and unconscious in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria, last week.

The pair are both still in hospital and Miss France remains seriously ill.

Mr Cook's friend Stephen Ward, who rushed to their aid last Thursday, said: "His mind was a total blank."

The pair were on holiday with eight friends at the Casablanca to celebrate Mr Cook's birthday when they fell on 16 October.

Mr Ward, one of those staying at the apartments, rushed to the scene after hearing someone fall, but did not originally realise it was his friend.

"I just couldn't believe what had happened"

"I darted down the stairs to try and get to him, then I found out it was Lee - and I thought: 'Oh God what's going on here?' And then I've seen Jemma there as well.

"She was unconscious but she was making a noise so she could have been semiconscious for all I know. All I wanted to do was just be with them until help came.

"I just couldn't believe what had happened."

The 28-year-old suffered stomach injuries and broke his wrist, shoulder and elbow in the fall. Miss France is believed to have multiple fractures.

Mr Cook's brother Wesley said it was believed the pair were talking on a balcony ledge when Miss France, who had been sitting on the ledge, toppled over.

"[It] looks like she's fallen back and he's tried to grab her because there are marks on her arms - scratches - where it looks like he tried to grab her and he's gone over with her."

Miss France's parents have flown out to visit their daughter in hospital and have spent every day at her bedside.

Mr Cook's family said they hoped he would be able to return home in about two weeks.
