Holiday plunge girl 'out of coma'

Jemma France and Lee Cook

A British teenager who fell six floors from the walkway of a holiday apartment in the Canary Islands has emerged from a coma, hotel workers have said.

Jemma France, 18, and Lee Cook, 28, of Greater Manchester, were found lying in a pool of blood by a night porter in the early hours of Thursday.

The pair were on holiday with eight friends at the Casablanca Apartments in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria.

Mr Cook's family say he is recovering and should be released within a week.

Hotel receptionist Isabel Bego said hospital staff had told her that Mr Cook, from Mottram had an operation on his stomach.

She said Miss France, who is from Dukinfield, had emerged from a coma but had multiple fractures to her head and neck.

"We've heard he was trying to save the girl when she fell"

Antonio Campos, manager of the hotel complex, said on Friday: "At midnight last night the reception was told that Mr Cook was better and was going home soon.

"But the woman is very bad. It's believed she fell down first and the man was behind her and fell on top."

It is not clear how the pair fell and Spanish police were still investigating the incident at the hotel on Thursday evening.

Mr Cook's father, Stephen Cook, said his other son, Wesley, had flown out to visit him.

He said: "He went down to the ward today and he said Lee's okay and should be released from hospital within a week.

"I'm not too sure about the girl though."

Mr Cook said he was "devastated" to learn what had happened after getting home from work on Thursday evening.

"He's a pretty quiet guy and nothing usually happens to him. We've heard he was trying to save the girl when she fell," he said.

His son had been celebrating his 28th birthday on the island before the accident. Wesley Cook plans to stay with his brother until he comes home.

Miss France's parents have flown out to visit their daughter in hospital, where her friends are said to be at her bedside. Others have posted get well messages on her Facebook page.

Thomas Cook, the agent which booked the holiday, said the pair had fallen from a corridor walkway and not a balcony as previously reported.

A spokesman said: "Our team in the resort are providing support and assistance to both the guests and their friends and family."

The pair checked into the hotel on Monday and were planning to stay for one week.
