Prisoner is found hanged at jail

A prisoner has been found hanged in a cell at a Greater Manchester jail.

Marc Hunter, 46, was found in his cell at HMP Manchester, formerly known as Strangeways, at about midnight on Monday.

Prison officers were alerted by the man's cellmate, a Ministry of Justice (MOJ) spokeswoman said.

Hunter was serving a six-year sentence for drug offences. His death will be investigated by the prisons and probation ombudsman.

An MOJ spokeswoman said: "Staff attempted resuscitation until the arrival of paramedics. Mr Hunter was taken to an outside hospital but unfortunately was pronounced dead at 0130 BST.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Hunter."

Hunter was sentenced on two counts of importing Class A drugs at Manchester Crown Court a week ago.
