Victim of hit-and-run identified

An 89-year-old woman who was killed in a hit-and-run in Greater Manchester has been named by police.

Doris Wade, from Stockport, was struck by a car in Turves Road in Heald Green, Stockport, on Wednesday morning.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, described as blue and a similar size to a Nissan Micra or Peugeot, did not stop at the scene or report the crash.

The victim was taken to hospital where she later died. Any witnesses are asked to contact the police.

Sgt Jon White, from the Road Policing Unit, said: "The collision occurred on a busy road in broad daylight and I am certain someone would have seen something.

"It is difficult to comprehend how anyone can drive off from the scene of an accident, leaving an elderly woman dying in the road. "

A post-mortem examination is due to take place later.
