Major blaze at chemical factory

Fire at Stockport factory

Fire crews have been tackling a major fire which at a chemical factory in Greater Manchester.

The Fire Service said a machine caught fire at European Colour Pigment Limited on Hempshaw Lane in the Hillgate area of Stockport on Tuesday morning.

Five fire engines and about 25 firefighters were called and surrounding roads were cordoned off.

Police are warning people living nearby to close their windows and doors and stay indoors where possible.

Some homes and businesses are also being evacuated as a precaution.

The fire caused plumes of black smoke to rise hundreds of feet into the air, and created a foul smell in the area.

St Mary's Way was closed to traffic between the junctions of Hempshaw Lane, Hall Street and the A6.
