Homes evacuated near garage fire

Scene of fire

Firefighters have been tackling a large blaze at a garage in the Gorton area of Manchester.

About 50 homes were evacuated in the area around Marquis Street because of oxygen and acetylene cylinders inside the garage building.

At its height, up to 80 firefighters tackled the blaze, which was brought under control by Friday evening.

Road closures around North Reddish and Levenshulme are likely to remain in place until Saturday morning.

A number of roads near Longford Road West and Broom Lane are shut.

Traffic is diverted to Stockport Road, but motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Many of the residents moved because of the blaze are staying with family or friends, although some are being housed overnight at a leisure centre in Belle Vue.
