Man held after police stand-off

A man has been arrested after threatening to harm himself and cause damage to his Greater Manchester home.

Police were called to a house on Midge Hall Drive in Rochdale on Thursday and trained negotiators spent the afternoon at the scene.

A man in his early 50s left the house just after 1700 BST. He was detained by police officers on suspicion of threats to cause damage.

The area remains cordoned off while police make sure the area is safe.

Several surrounding roads were closed but have since reopened.

Greater Manchester Police said traffic remained heavy and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
