A 33-year-old woman is critically ill after the car she was driving hit a lamppost in Greater Manchester in the early hours.

The accident happened on the junction of Bolton Street and Peel Way in Bury town centre.

The driver suffered serious injuries and is being treated at Fairfield hospital. Two male passengers, aged 19 and 21, were also hurt.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash.

The A56 was closed in both directions at Bury Bridge from Jubilee Way to Crostens Road, but has since reopened.
