Tributes to police crash victim

Police van involved in crash

The parents of a woman who died after a collision between a car and a police van answering an emergency call have paid tribute to their daughter.

Angela Purcell, 38, was in a Seat Ibiza which collided with the vehicle in Patricroft, Salford, on Friday.

Her five-year-old niece and the male driver were also injured and are being treated in Hope Hospital, Salford.

Ms Purcell's parents, Gordon and Silvia, said she was a "loving, caring and affectionate" daughter.

"She always showed a lot of love and affection and cared for all those who knew her," they said.

"She will be deeply missed by all her family and especially her niece Darla."

Witness appeal

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the collision, which happened on Green Lane at about 1530 BST on Friday.

The road was closed between its junctions with Liverpool Road and Cromwell Road while emergency services dealt with the scene.

Both officers in the police vehicle suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The young girl suffered bruising and the driver suffered minor injuries to his arm and chest. Both remain in hospital.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the driver had been suspended from driving duties pending further inquiries - but not from duty.

A spokesman said this was standard procedure following road traffic collisions involving police vehicles.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call Greater Manchester Police.
