A carer from Greater Manchester who killed a 16-month-old baby by holding him upside down and flinging him against furniture has been jailed.

Agnes Wong was sentenced to five years in prison at Preston Crown Court on Tuesday after being found guilty of the manslaughter of Hugo Wang in 2007.

The 28-year-old had been looking after the child at her flat in Frank Cowin Court, Fitzwilliam Street, Salford.

The court heard Hugo suffered severe head injuries and died the next day.

Bite marks

Wong was paid £120 a week to look after the boy, as his parents worked long hours in a Chinese restaurant in Southport.

During the trial, which took place at Manchester Crown Court in January, the jury was told that Wong had picked the youngster up by his ankles and flung him against either a bed or a settee which had caused the child to bleed and his brain to swell severely.

Other injuries noted at hospital included bruising to his legs, bite marks and a burn.

Wong admitted hitting and biting Hugo in the days before his death, when he had been "naughty", but she denied murder.

On sentencing Wong, the judge, Mr Justice Irwin, said Hugo had "a sad, short life" and that her actions had been a "a serious, deliberate assault".
