United fans at Roma match praised

The behaviour of Manchester United fans who travelled to Rome for Tuesday night's Champions League tie has been praised by Greater Manchester Police.

Previous meetings in the Italian capital between AS Roma and Manchester United have been marred by violence.

But Supt John Graves said lessons have been learned and United's 2-0 win in the quarter-final first leg saw no serious violence.

Thousands of police officers patrolled the streets of Rome to prevent clashes.

Carabinieri and military police lined the streets surrounding the stadium and four riot vans were on guard on the Duca D'Aosta, a known trouble spot.

It was the fifth time the two clubs have met in under a year.

Previous scuffles

In the 2007 Champions League quarter-final, three United fans were stabbed outside the Stadio Olimpico.

Scuffles also took place outside Old Trafford during the second leg, with 21 people arrested.

The teams also played each other in the group stage of this season's competition and four Manchester United fans were jailed in Italy for clashing with rival fans in Rome in December.

On Tuesday, Manchester United fans were ferried to the ground in organised coaches.

A double entrance gate system was also in place to keep trouble at bay.

A total of 1,400 Italian police were thought to be on duty in and around the stadium - a ratio of one officer to every three Manchester United fans at the game.
