Sixth formers die after car crash

Jonathan Sharples and Daniel Harrison  Two teenagers died after the car they were travelling in crashed as they made their way to a school rugby game.

Daniel Harrison and Jonathan Sharples were both 17 and sixth form students at Bolton School in Greater Manchester.

Jonathan, of Lazonby Avenue, Aspull, was driving the blue Ford Ka when it crashed into a tree on Old Kiln Lane in Heaton, Bolton, on Wednesday afternoon.

Daniel, of Old Kiln Lane, died at the scene. Jonathan was taken to hospital where he died hours later.

The pair were A-level students at the private school, one of the North West's leading independent schools whose former pupils include actor Sir Ian McKellan and radio DJ Mark Radcliffe.

It is understood the boys were on their way to the weekly Wednesday afternoon sports day to play rugby.

Pupils were told of the news in a special assembly on Thursday.

A spokesman for the school said: "At the main assembly this morning, which was a very emotional event, all of the boys of the school were informed of this terrible accident.

"They had just completed their university applications and a bright future was forecast for both students.

"Both were extremely well-liked by staff and pupils alike."

The teenagers' families paid tribute in statements released on Thursday.

Jonathan's parents, David and Catherine, said: "He was everyone's friend and always looked after his mates.

"His friends came first and he was always there for them. He will be sadly missed."

Daniel's parents, Steven and Amanda, said: "Daniel has touched so many lives and will leave a massive void."

Police are appealing to any witnesses to the crash to contact them.
