Police in Italy over United match

Police at Old Trafford Officers from Manchester have travelled to Italy to finalise policing for United's match against AC Milan.

A delegation from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is in Milan to talk to authorities about the two ties - the first at Old Trafford on 24 April.

The teams will meet again at AC Milan's San Siro stadium on 2 May.

Ch Supt Janette McCormick said officers would be using knowledge gained at the Roma fixtures to police the match. Trouble flared at both ties.

Four Italian fans and 12 English fans were charged with offences following the Champions League match at United's ground on Tuesday.

Uefa is investigating trouble at the first leg in Rome.

Ch Supt McCormick is meeting football representatives, police and local authorities.

She said: "Every match brings with it different experiences and challenges, and we will be taking knowledge gleaned from the Roma experience forward into the AC Milan fixture.

"I hope the match will be an enjoyable event for everyone who attends and that a carnival atmosphere will be created by the genuine supporters, which will demonstrate all that is good about the game in the UK.

"Europe's eyes will be on Old Trafford once again and our objective is to ensure that the event is memorable for all the right reasons."

GMP officers will travel to Milan for the second leg of the Champions League semi-final.
