Twenty-three wireless CCTV cameras have been installed in the Moss Side and Old Trafford areas.
The cameras have motion sensors and are linked via the internet, which allows for a quicker review of recorded images, Greater Manchester Police said.
The cameras will be monitored on a daily basis by Manchester City Council's CCTV control room.
Local community groups asked for the CCTV cameras to be set up to give extra security, a police spokesman said.
Supt John O'Hare said: "This is a real success for local people who originally identified the need for increased CCTV coverage.
"These new cameras will help to prevent crime, provide reassurance for the local community and provide extra support for police operations."
There have been a number of shootings and stabbings in the areas over recent months.
At the beginning of March officers from Greater Manchester Police seized a number of firearms in raids at properties in the Moss Side and Trafford areas and on 20 March, Davon Landell was stabbed to death in the Moss Side Community Centre.
