Minimum term for stabbing murder

Lisa Bamford A woman who stabbed her neighbour to death in front of members of her family must serve a minimum of 15 years in jail, a judge has ruled.

Shukri Bilal, 22, stabbed 32-year-old Lisa Bamford in the neck with a kitchen knife after an argument at the victim's home in Oldham, Greater Manchester.

Bilal, a Somali refugee, was convicted of murder at Manchester Crown Court on 7 February and jailed for life.

Her minimum term was announced by Mr Justice Beatson at London's High Court.

During her trial, the court heard that Bilal walked into the house in August 2006 waving the knife and shouting: "I am going to kill you all."

Deportation recommended

Bilal, who was swearing and shouting, then stabbed Ms Bamford once in the neck before attempting to attack other people in the room.

The family managed to push Bilal out of the house and Ms Bamford was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Mr Justice Beatson, sitting at London's Royal Courts of Justice on Friday, told Bilal that she would not be released "until the parole board is satisfied that you need not be confined for the protection of the public".

He said: "I must tell you that although the parole board can consider your release after the period that I am now setting, the fact is that statistically, that is not the date on which many people are released."

He also made a recommendation for her deportation, adding that this was a "matter for the Home Secretary in due course".

The judge said her attack on Ms Bamford had been "ferocious".
