A man arrested after a knife attack on an 82-year-old woman is being held under the Mental Health Act.

Ann Driscoll was stabbed nine times in the neck and stomach as she walked home from shopping in Harlesden, north-west London, on Monday.

She remains in a central London hospital in a stable condition.

Police said a 22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder was being detained in hospital for assessment under the Mental Health Act.

The 22-year-old was arrested in the early hours of Friday at an address in Harlesden.

It is believed Mrs Driscoll was attacked in Burns Road at about 1500 BST on her way home after visiting Tesco in Harlesden High Street at 1420 BST.

She then staggered to Fortune Gate Road where she was helped by a member of the public.
