Charity relay sets world record

Tre Azam

More than 1,500 people took part in a record-breaking run in east London to raise money to help children in Gaza.

The event, held at Mile End Stadium on Saturday, attracted 1,675 participants, setting a world record for the most people running a 100-metre relay race.

Only 300 runners were needed to set the record but 1,300 people signed up for the 12-hour race, called Gaza100.

All the money raised in the run, organised by the IF charity, will go to the Save the Children Gaza Appeal.

Humanitarian aid

IF charity spokesman Ruhul Tarafder told BBC London: "It's a fantastic achievement and has gone beyond our wildest expectations.

"It shows how many people are really keen to support and fundraise for Gaza, and it doesn't have to be through protesting, but can be in a fun way."

Among the runners were Labour peer Baroness Pola Uddin, MPs Jim Fitzpatrick and Jeremy Corbyn, and former BBC The Apprentice contestants Tre Azam, Ghazal Asif and Syed Ahmed.

Besides the run, which was held from noon to midnight, there was also a youth stage with a range of artists and comedians performing live as well as children's entertainment.

Save The Children's Gaza Appeal provides humanitarian aid for children in Gaza.
