Taxi service for London's canals

Kayaking

An alternative method of travelling through London has been launched with a kayak taxi service operating on the city's canals.

Expert canoeists will ferry passengers in kayaks along the Regent's, Grand Union and Hertford Union canals.

The service operates during daylight hours from April to October with tours also offered.

British Waterways, which maintains the country's rivers and canals, hoped the venture would be a success.

All the canoeists are qualified instructors and, using "paddle power" alone, will transport visitors at up to 4mph.

Danny Gillard from Thames River Adventures Limited, the company behind the idea, said: "The canal system in London is a real hidden gem, there's fantastic architecture, unusual views of the city and a wealth of wildlife."

Louise Fishleigh from British Waterways said: "Whilst the kayaks will never be able to compete with London's iconic black cabs, the service offers an alternative method of getting from A to B."
