Success of 2012 Games 'doubted'

London's Olympic Stadium

Britons are still not convinced the 2012 London Olympic Games will be a success, according to a new survey.

Only 15% of the 2,006 people who were quizzed online think the Games will be good for the United Kingdom's international reputation.

A further 45% think other areas of the UK, with as much or even greater regeneration needs, are just as capable of hosting the Olympics as the capital.

The British government says the Games will leave a lasting legacy for the UK.

The survey, by market research agency Opinium Research, showed the long-term benefits of staging the Games was an issue for 39% of those who took part, while 10% were convinced Britain could become a world-leading sporting nation by hosting the Games.

"Who knows, we may become a nation of Olympians in the next four years"

Researchers also found that the Beijing Olympics has inspired 6% of people to take up sport or re-visit a sport they once did.

Researcher Mark Hodson said: "With two gold medals already won in Beijing perhaps people's hopes for Britain's success on the 2012 medal table will change.

"Hopefully Beijing will inspire the younger generation to take up sport or try something they have not done before.

A Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) spokeswoman said: "The UK is well on track to deliver a truly spectacular Games in 2012 which will leave a lasting sporting, social and economic legacy for the whole UK.

"Our own research, conducted ahead of the launch of our Legacy Action Plan in June, showed that 76% of people questioned were pleased that the Games were coming to the UK whilst seven out of 10 people thought the Games would have a positive impact on the UK."
