Brazilian electro funk band CSS are headlining the Rise festival, billed as London's biggest free music festival.
They are among 50 global performers, including Jimmy Cliff and Dub Pistols, at Finsbury Park in north London.
But the Greater London Authority event, now in its eighth year, is no longer called an "anti-racism" festival.
Arts and culture director Munira Mirza said: "We have tried to involve lots of community groups that haven't been involved previously."
She added: "We decided this year to stress the fact that this is a positive event and it's about bringing Londoners together around the things that unite them - their music, their love of culture."
New and established artists who have emerged from the UK's youth projects and underground scene are also performing.
