A doctor has been suspended for trying to hide a mistake made during a circumcision operation.
Dr Anthonipillai Nicholas-Pillai operated on a 22-week-old Muslim boy at Bush Hill Park Medical Centre in Enfield, north London, in 2001.
A mistake during the procedure left the boy with discoloured genitals, the General Medical Council (GMC) heard, but the doctor lied to hide his error.
Dr Nicholas-Pillai was suspended for six months for dishonest misconduct.
Refused notes
The GMC's fitness to practise panel heard the doctor failed to remove enough skin from the baby's penis during the circumcision. His organ was left discoloured, although it worked normally.
When his parents complained about the operation, Dr Nicholas-Pillai refused to release the baby's medical notes.
He handed them over six months later but they contained "inaccuracies", the panel heard.
Chairman Dr Roger Ferguson said: "This dishonest conduct is compounded by the fact that you have given inconsistent and unreliable evidence at this hearing."
The doctor's suspension will begin in one month's time, unless he appeals against the ruling.
