House blast residents return home

The collapsed houses in South Harrow

Residents evacuated when an explosion tore through a terrace in north-west London, killing a man and injuring two others, have begun returning home.

Harrow Council said 50 of the 66 properties affected by the blast in Stanley Road, Harrow, have been deemed safe for people to return.

Residents from 12 homes will remain in temporary accommodation as police forensic experts examine the area.

Emmad Qureshi, 26, was killed in the explosion on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the council said a meeting would be held on Monday night to discuss the longer-term arrangements with those still unable to return home.

Completely destroyed

A teenage girl who suffered burns and another 26-year-old man who suffered head and arm injuries remain in hospital.

Police are looking at a possible link to reports of a purple liquid being poured through the letterbox of the house next door to Mr Qureshi's.

Officers believe the injured teenager may have been the intended target of the attack which took place about 10 hours before the blast.

One house was completely destroyed and two others were badly damaged in the explosion which happened at about 2140 BST.

A police spokesman said work to identify the liquid would not begin until they had access to the property, which was likely to be next week.
